Sixth Class is the eighth and final year of primary school in Ireland. It typically includes  aged 11 to 13 years old. The school day runs from 8:45 a.m. to 2:25 p.m., Monday to Friday.

In this important transitional year, pupils consolidate their learning across all subject areas and prepare for the move to secondary school. They are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning through group work, debates, self-reflection, problem-solving, digital projects, and cross-curricular assignments.

Curriculum Highlights:

  • English, Irish, and Mathematics are studied daily, as core subjects.
  • Pupils engage with a total of 12 subject areas throughout the week.
  • Thematic teaching is used where appropriate, linking subjects for deeper learning.

Mathematics

Children continue to work with real materials to explore advanced concepts in:

  • Number, Algebra, Measures, Shape & Space, and Data
    Tasks become more complex, encouraging deeper thinking and problem-solving.

SESE (Social, Environmental and Scientific Education)

pupils learn through the local environment and broaden their studies to:

  • Explore Irish and world history
  • Investigate scientific concepts
  • Study geographical features in Ireland and beyond
    They develop key skills as scientists, historians, and geographers.

The Arts (Visual Arts, Music & Drama)

Creativity is nurtured through activities that emphasize:

  • Imagination, self-expression, and creative thinking
  • Focus is placed on the learning process rather than the final product.

SPHE (Social, Personal and Health Education)

Children explore:

  • Respect for themselves and others
  • Relationships and Sexuality Education
  • Emotional well-being and healthy relationships

Sixth Class is a time of great growth and change. pupils work on developing their organisational skills, emotional regulation, and healthy study habits.
